Bueno para los venezolanos

There was an article from Time magazine that was published at Yahoo.com, Why Venezuelans Turned on Chavez. Obviously Hugo Chavez is a fascist maniac who wants to become a totalitarian dictator because of how well that’s worked in Latin America’s past. That, I gathered from the article, is the answer to why Venezuelans, especially young people, voted No in his recent national referendum to make him like president for life and enact numerous Marxist/Stalinist policies (that haven’t already been enacted). This paragraph stood out:

Poor voters unhappy with the proposed constitutional overhaul said they were more troubled about measures to abolish presidential term limits and facilitate state expropriation of private property than they were enthused by articles that could benefit the poor, such as social security for informal workers and popular participation in government. That begs the question: did Chavez sacrifice measures that could have helped the poor because he insisted on a political power grab?

Yes, the socialism would have been good for the poor, that’s what the 20th century has shown me! I don’t know what other conclusion you could draw from the great experiments in welfare-state socialism than that it benefits the poor better than capitalism! All those other welfare and redistribution programs currently in effect have propelled Venezuela into prosperity in a matter of years!

But kudos to the poor and especially the youth of Venezuela for seeing through Chavez’s crazed power-grab.

Also, boo to the author who apparently didn’t need to demonstrate a deep knowledge of English sayings to get published in Time.
