The philosophy of Firefly

The State Theatre in Ann Arbor did a midnight showing of Serenity on Saturday night, so, naturally, I was extremely excited about it and was looking forward to it for two weeks. I went with my girlfriend and several other friends, most of whom are huge Firefly fans. I pick good friends.

There are so many awesome parts of that movie, from the action to the humor to the awesome secret that the plot moves towards. I just wanted to post Captain Reynolds’s little speech to his crew after they discover the secret, because it is a very popular, if not so academic, statement of libertarian opposition to the State:

Y’all got on this boat for different reasons, but y’all come to the same place. So now I’m asking more of you than I have before. Maybe all. Sure as I know anything, I know this: they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten—they’ll swing back to the belief that they can make people…better. And I do not hold to that. So no more runnin’. I aim to misbehave.
